Sound has a huge impact on how we feel, and even on how we act, but did you know that it can also have a major impact on your physical health as well? Science has proven this over and over again, so it isn’t any wonder that more people are becoming interested in the Tomatis Method for a variety of health concerns, but it is especially useful in the treatment of various types of learning disabilities.
The Tomatis Method was developed by Dr. Alfred A. Tomatis, and has actually been in development for more than fifty years, as more and more is learned about the auditory system, and the effect that it has on our mental, emotional, and physical health. Dr. Tomatis, who is French, is an Otolaryngologist.
Dr. Tomatis has had much success throughout those years, and the method has been used throughout Europe and Canada for some time. However, it isn’t widely used in the United States, and is still considered to be an experimental or alternative form of treatment.
The benefits of this method, from a physical and mental standpoint, are astounding in number. Overall, there has been success with the method for use in patients who have Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, learning disabilities and delays, Dyslexia, Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Down’s Syndrome, Pervasive Development Disorder, problems with balance, problems with coordination, and even motor skills problems.
To date, over thirty studies have been conducted regarding the Tomatis Method. Those studies have had amazing results. In the study for children with Autism, it was found that more than half of the children in the study benefited from the method used. It was also found through these studies that the use of the method makes learning foreign languages much easier and faster, even when a learning disability does not exist. It has also been proven that the method can make pregnancy and delivery easier, and can even reduce the amount of time that a woman is in labor.
None of these studies have been conducted in the United States. They have all been conducted in countries throughout Europe, but there are studies that are scheduled in the United States, through centers that are set up for the study and practice of the method. To date, only twelve such centers exist in the United States.
