Salt scrubs are used to exfoliate dead skin. Exfoliating regularly can promote healthy skin by opening your pores and removing daily toxins. If you have sensitive skin you will need to test an area of your skin before doing a full body scrub because they can be harsh and abrasive. Keep in mind that if you are making your own mixture you can alter the grain of salt being used thereby controlling the abrasiveness and the level of exfoliation.
The most common salts used are sea salts due to their soothing effects and composition. They contain 21 minerals. Some of these are zinc, potassium, bromide, magnesium, calcium, sulfur, iodine and of course, sodium. These minerals have many qualities. They are known for healing the skin tissues and soothing the skin. They are essential in cell metabolism and provide an anti allergen property to the surface of the skin. Sea salt also acts naturally as a disinfectant for the skin and regulates moisture.
Scrubs vary from very fine granulated to very coarse. The finer grains are a gentler exfoliation removing less dead skin while the coarse grains are a more abrasive and deeper exfoliate removing more. Only a small amount of the mixture should be applied at a time because in this case, more is not better. Basically using a smaller amount at a time ensures that the abrasive works on the skin and not on the other grains of salt.
By using salt scrubs you thoroughly clean your skin and unclog your pores which allow your skin to breathe. They remove toxins and stimulate circulation. They have been shown to relieve the effects of eczema and psoriasis. Exfoliation of dead skin nourishes, softens and regenerates your skin. Another benefit is that you can make your own salt scrub at home. You can add oils such as baby oil to the salt to moisturize your skin and give it a healthy glow. You can even add herbs or fragrance to enhance your experience.
Using a scrub is really simple. Use about one to two tablespoons while in the shower and begin gently massaging it into your skin. Start with your extremities and work toward your heart using a circular motion to massage it in. Leave this on for at least 5 minutes and for up to 15 minutes and then simply rinse it off. The frequency of exfoliation is totally up to you and your skin type. As you can see this does not need to be an expensive or intrusive way of maintaining the health of your skin.
